A.C.: AFTER COLLAPSE® (sometimes briefly referred to as A.C.) is a tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) set in a post-apocalyptic future. The Origin of A.C.: AFTER COLLAPSE® combines a broad overview of our development process with thoughts on things to consider when creating your own game.
A.C. came to be after over three decades of thought, discussion, and reworking. Though team members came and went, the overall goal remained the same—to design a post-apocalyptic TTRPG system that provided players and referees with the tools to build their own post-Collapse environment, envision who and what could be found in it, and simulate the results of the interactions between these elements.
Every game system is different. The individual members of a development team each bring their own unique combination of imagination, insights, skills, talents, and personality to the table. While the way we functioned may not work for you, this volume may give you some ideas on how to move your dream from a concept to a playable reality.

Intelligent machines may match wits with Survivors or help them to reach their goals.
A.C.: AFTER COLLAPSE® uses a d20-based architecture. Features include:
- a classless character generation system;
- a Character Point (CP) system that rewards players when they complete scenario and campaign goals, allowing them to improve attributes and acquire new skills;
- detailed rules for applying the effects of combat, radiation, and poison;
- a turn-based combat and action system; and
- guidelines for referees to develop their own scenarios and campaigns.

Medicine, whether natural or technological, can make them more likely to recover from whatever ails them.
Salvagers and scavengers pride themselves on their ability to find food and medical supplies wherever they are. It doesn’t matter if what they locate, take, or purchase is basic or high-tech. Whatever it is aids them in living another day to achieve their goals.
A.C.: AFTER COLLAPSE® uses a d20-based architecture. Features include:
• craft-oriented Basic Skills that allow Survivors and NPCs to make
food and drugs to their own specifications;
• calorie values for a variety of manmade and fabricated foodstuffs;
• Drug Strength (DRG) values and described effects that reflect what
manmade or fabricated medications do for patients who take them;

Whether a Survivor wants to defend himself from others or take what someone else has, weapons are useful tools to have. Not everyone has access to firearms or explosives, so they use what’s available. Low-tech weapons have their place. They can be used to inflict smaller amounts of damage to opponents, allowing them to be disabled or driven away instead of killed. Additionally, many types of low-tech weapons don’t need to be reloaded. The materials for those that do can often just be picked up off the ground.
A.C. uses a d20-based architecture. Features include:
- a craft-oriented Basic Skill system that allows survivors and NPCs to make weapons and accessories to their own specifications;
- a system of modifiers that adjust Accuracy, Damage, and Penetration to increase the lethality of well-made implements;
- differentiation between High Velocity (HV) Low Velocity (LV), and Energy (EN) attacks to simulate the potential effectiveness of weapons and armor;
- allocation of lethal and/or nonlethal damage based on skill level; and
- the use of Hard Points (HDPs) and Vigor Points (VGPs) to simulate the toughness of Survivors and NPCs and their ability to resist lethal and nonlethal damage.
